EXTREMELY RARE ENGRAVED NEW HAVEN ARMS VOLCANIC SMALL FRAME TARGET PISTOL. Cal. 31. SN 553. This extremely rare pistol has 6-3/8″ oct bbl with integral magazine tube, tiny brass front sight and tall fixed rear sight. It has one line address “NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14. 1854”. The tiny brass frame has light patterns of foliate arabesque engraving on both sides, over the top and back strap. It is fitted with matching numbered smooth walnut grips. This is one of the great rarities in volcanic collecting. Flayderman’s Guide states that only 225 of these pistols were ever made in the period 1857 to 1860. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl and magazine tube retain 15-20% orig blue, mostly in sheltered areas with the balance a mottled medium to dark brown patina. Front bbl keeper is cracked around the sight. Receiver is fine with good sharp edges and retains a medium mustard patina with traces of orig silver plating. Lever and hammer are a dark brown patina. Grips are sound with moderate wear and retains about 95% orig varnish. Mechanics are fine. Strong bright bore with light to moderate pitting. 4-57558 JR310 (17,500-27,500)
