RARE AND UNUSUAL SET OF FIVE AMERICAN LADDER BACK CHAIRS PAINTED WITH DUTCH LANDSCAPES. Probably 19th century. Consisting of four armchairs and a single side chair, each with spool-turned finials, an arched crest rail over four conforming slats. The armchairs with shaped arms on turned supports continuing to cylindrical legs on ring-turned button feet joined by a double box stretcher. Each with a trapezoidal woven rush seat. This unusual set in cream paint with polychrome speckles and striations centering flower heads. Each slat paint decorated with a pastoral scene of varied subject matter. All painted in the continental or Dutch taste depicting scenes with coastal sailing vessels, wind mills and with farm animals. SIZE: Armchair: 44″ h x 24″ w; Seats: 18″ to 19″ h. PROVENANCE: Descended through the family of Shepherd Brooks, Boston, MA. & Medford, MA. CONDITION: Structurally sound but in need of tightening, with damages to woven seats.
