EXTREMELY RARE CASED STOCKED VOLCANIC PISTOL. Cal. 41 RF. SN 414. Usual configuration with 16-1/2″ oct bbl, integral magazine tube with pinched blade iron front sight and a receiver mounted wheel adjustable rear sight that may be an old replacement. It has the right shape and conformation but is slightly narrow in the dovetail. The top flat has the usual Volcanic Repeating Arms bbl marking, only partly legible from a light strike. The bolt has been converted to rimfire by replacing the bolt head with a rimfire firing pin and attaching an extractor to the bottom with a corresponding cut on the bottom of the bbl and a groove in the carrier. It has 2-pc nicely figured walnut grips and is accompanied by its orig straight grain walnut stock with a rare orig walnut casing 24-1/2″ long, 6-1/4″ wide and 2-1/4″ high with pine bottom. It is lined with burgundy velvet and compartmented in the bottom for the pistol, stock and a cleaning rod. There is a covered compartment at the left end with a replacement lid. The cleaning rod compartment now holds an extra magazine spring. The SN is stamped on the left side of the buttstrap under the grip, inside both grips, on the lever, and all of the visible internal parts as well as the sideplates. The faceted tang on the crescent brass buttplate also has the SN. Inside the tang of the buttplate is the assembly number “18”, which number is also stamped on the butt of the stock underneath the buttplate and on the left side of the attaching iron in the wrist of the buttstock. The two wood screws in the buttplate also have the “18” assembly number. The bbl under the swivel has the assembly number “95” which number also appears on the swivel and on the front sight locking ring. Only a very few of these pistol carbines were made in the period of 1855 to 1857 and they are rarely ever found with a matching buttstock and orig casings are extraordinarily rare. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 75 – 80% thin orig blue, strong in the gullets, strong and bright on the swivel and front sight ring. Frame has sharp edges, appears to have never been polished or cleaned and retains a medium mustard patina with light hammer marks on top of the sideplates with other hammer marks on the carrier and around the carrier opening. Grips are sound with light handling and use marks, shows light edge wear and retains most of the orig varnish with some light oil staining around the frame. Mechanics are fine. Strong bright bore with scattered pitting. Stock has a series of gouges on both sides near the buttplate with other light handling and use marks and retains most of its orig factory varnish. Buttplate is a light mustard patina. Case has three grain checks in the lid with a spliced repair at the bottom rear edge and a crack in the back edge by the left hinge. Otherwise completely sound and retains most of its orig varnish with light handling and storage marks. Interior is beautiful with dark wine color showing slight soil in the bottom with damage from the front sight and hammer. One of the partitions has been reattached. 4-58079 JR491 (30,000-40,000)
