TWO MECHANICAL BANKS. 1) Manufactured by J & E Stevens. Although a fairly common bank, visually the bank has great form and eye appeal which is probably one of the reasons it was such a good seller at the turn of the century. When you put a coin on the side of the owl’s head, push lever, owl turns head towards where the coin was deposited. Although most people don’t give a hoot about this bank, it really has a lot of nice color and charm and probably was popular among the young folks. 2) Manufactured by the Gurney Refrigeration Company. The original bank made by Gurney is extremely scarce and rarely turns up at auction especially in multi-colored paint. This, however, is a later casting and not the original. Press a lever on the front of the stump. The elephant’s trunk swings up, deposits coin in howdah. SIZE: Both are 7-1/2″ h. CONDITION: 1) Bank is in very good to near excellent condition with some minor wear, but still retains most of its red paint on lever. 2) In excellent condition with key. 1-9886, 1-9901 (500-900)
