RARE PERSIAN RHAGES TYPE BOWL. 12th century. This fine enameled bowl from the Warren E. Cox collection and illustrated in Plate 98 of his book “The Book of Pottery and Porcelain,Volume 1“. The small bowl with sloping sides joined to a footed base. The exterior in deep indigo mottled glaze with lustred writing. The upper rim grading to a green. The bowl interior with triangular panels of turquoise, indigo and ivory having a secondary glaze forming borders between the panels and with scrolling circular brush strokes within the panels. The opposing ivory panels decorated with female figures of the period. A similar bowl is to be seen in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY having come, as did the above described bowl, from the collection of Warren E. Cox as quoted in a Bill of Sale dated November 5, 1958 by the office of S.H. Mori, Historic Arts from the Orient, Chicago, IL. SIZE: Ht. 2 3/4″ Diameter 7” PROVENANCE: This bowl is accompanied by the letter and original Bill of Sale, Chicago, IL together with a photocopy of the page illustrating this bowl in Warren Cox’s book CONDITION: Heavily and extensively restored and reassembled from all original fragments. 9-95800 (1,500-2,500)
