FINE CHINESE PAINT-DECORATED AND CARVED MARRIAGE BED. Late 19th- early 20th century, China. The canopy bed with ornately carved panels, the canopy frieze inset with three eglomise glass panels above a pierced gallery carved with arrow heads flanked by carved panels, the canopy comprised of rows of recessed contrasting panels. The headboard, surmounted by eglomise glass panels within pierced carved surrounds centering a beveled and bullseye mirror plated hinged door, within carved foliate surrounds above a storage drawer. Flanked by eglomise glass panels decorated with floral filled urns and children. Each side section similarly carved and decorated with eglomise panels depicting domestic life. The base of the headboard and sides enhanced with a single panel paint-decorated with birds in flowering shrubbery within arabesque frames. The mattress frame behind the heavy molded foot section decorated with polychrome floral vinery, raised on carved legs depicting guardian lions. The molded apron floral carved. SIZE: 7’6″ h x 6’8″ w overall x 7′ d. Bed frame: 6′ l x 5′ w. CONDITION: The bed with original surfaces. Original surfaces, panels and mirror plates. Mirror plates with some foxing of silver, one eglomise panel with cracks, slight and minimal overall loss to painted decoration at foot of bed and on lower painted panels from normal and expected cleaning.
