JOLLY JOE CLOWN & SCOTCHMAN BANKS. Both banks were made in Germany by Selhumer & Strauss in the 1920s. Jolly Joe Clown bank is lithographed in very bright colors, the back showing a scene of clowns performing on top of a pig. Front pictures a clown face with a lever underneath. When lever is pressed down, the clown sticks out his tongue. Place coin on tongue; release lever to deposit coin in bank. Verse on front of Scotchman bank states, “Lift my Sporran lightly/On my tongue a penny/If ye do this nightly/Ye’ll soon ha ‘e many.” SIZE: Each about 7″ h. CONDITION: Clown bank has very bright and colorful lithography; excellent plus condition. Eyes of clown are somewhat loose and work sporadically; one tab holding on top of bank is missing. Overall has very appealing look. Lithography of Scotchman bank has darkened over the years and shows some discoloration; also missing a tab from the dome top. 1-9928, 1-9931 (600-800)
