TWO NEW ENGLAND CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY MIRRORS. Last quarter 18th century. The first with rectangular mirror plate within a gilt slip, the conforming frame with contrasting string inlay. The unusual bat wing scroll crest flanked by scrolled ears above a shaped apron. The second with open-work gilt decorated phoenix crest flanked by scrolled ears. The rectangular mirror plate with gilt surround within a molded frame. All above a scrolling apron. SIZE: 32″ x 17-1/2″; 27-1/2″ x 17″ respectively. PROVENANCE: From a fine Massachusetts home. CONDITION: Both mirrors with original mirror plate and backboards. Both with old surfaces and nice patina. The first with repairs to scrolls at crest area and with a single loss to veneer and old cosmetic repairs in other scrolls. The second example with reattachment of phoenix head. Other small and minimal cosmetic touch ups. 9-22114 (1,000-1,500)
