RARE NORTHWEST COAST NATIVE AMERICAN SPEAKER’S STAFF. Late 19th century. This nicely carved cypress staff depicting three human figures; the topmost holding a fish and wearing the headdress of a cat, the middle figure holding a staff with conical headdress and the bottom figure wearing a trunkated headdress, holding a rabbit and standing on a turtle head(?). The staff surmounted by a pommel grip and having an elongated tip. Probably Pacific coast of Vancouver island. SIZE: L 33 3/4″ PROVENANCE: From a private Maine collection. CONDITION: Very fine original condition with good patina. All carvings intact except top figure’s arms may be repaired or replacement. 9-96703 (5,000-7,000)
