“ESMERALDA” FORTUNE TELLER WITH RARE ORIGINAL EDISON CYLINDERS. Over the years, many different style fortune telling machines were made by many different companies. This particular machine is one of the rarest examples, but of unknown manufacture. Most likely of the 1920s-30s vintage, one’s traditional impression of a gypsy fortune teller is in a Bedouin tent. Purchased approximately 20+ years ago at the famed Smith auction in New York City, this particular example is one of a handful known to exist, and perhaps only one of three that is complete with the Edison cylinders made for this machine and still in working order! It is fascinating to watch the actions of this unique machine as Esmeralda waves her right hand over an array of tarot cards while bowing her head and verbally giving you your fortune, which can be heard on a set of accompanying earphones. One other interesting feature is that she gives the illusion of breathing as you see her chest heave in a realistic fashion. More than likely Gary Kaplan had restored this machine for Dr. Smith and much attention was paid to all aspects and details. A top notch restoration by an expert. Included are two exceedingly rare boxed original Edison cylinders marked “Gypsy Fortune Teller (Numbers 1 and 2)”. SIZE: 75″ h x 20″ d x 27″ w.
