SCARCE RECLINING CHINAMAN MECHANICAL BANK. Manufactured by J & E Stevens. In the 1880s, the Chinese were looked down upon because they supplied cheap labor for working on the railroad and other businesses. This bank depicts a Chinaman who is laying down on his back playing cards with a rat under his feet. This shows the sentiment of the Chinese worker in the 1880s. When coin is placed in Chinaman’s pocket and lever is pressed, the Chinaman’s hands flip over and the right hand exposes four cards with aces. SIZE: 8-1/4″ l. CONDITION: Bank is in excellent plus condition with some minor chipping. Colors are very vibrant. Definitely a superior condition bank. The only drawback is the left forearm is restored, but the hand appears original. Bank appears professionally cleaned. 1-9863 (2,000-4,000)
