OUTSTANDING SCALE MODEL OF THE AUTOCAR MILITARY TRANSPORT VEHICLE. Built by the Autocar Company in 1915 in Ardmore, PA, as one of two sales samples for a commercial vehicle show in New York City. This extraordinary quarter-scale, closed cab dump truck model retains its original olive drab paint surface and factory lettering. Handmade by Autocar master craftsmen to exact blueprint specifications, the truck was constructed of steel, brass, aluminum, iron, hardwood, leather, rubber, and canvas and is a precise replica of the company’s standard two-ton truck that became known as “the Mule” in WWI in Europe. Every detail from the full-size model is present in this sample, including carbide-type headlamps, leather driver’s seat cushions, functional, cab-mounted klaxon horn, miniature grease fittings, fully finned radiator core, twelve-lug artillery spoke wheels and hard tires, functional gear shifts and brake levers, full leaf suspension, an electric motor-driven shaft to lift the two-section dump bed, roll-down side and front curtains for winterizing the cab, and many other astonishing details. The model weighs approximately two hundred pounds and measures just over four feet in length. Clutch, brake, and accelerator pedals are mounted on the diamond-plate cab floor. A treated canvas fabric covers the “C” cab frame, which is assembled from tongue-in-groove hardwood slats over the operator’s compartment. Bronze tow hooks are mounted on the chassis corners. An engine crank is in place at the base of the radiator shell. Cast mounting steps are found on both sides of the cab. Side-louvered hoods lift to reveal the engine compartment and its four cylinder gasoline engine (unknown working condition.) Spark plug wires, magneto, water pump, and other details are to be found in place, as well as cast Autocar logos on both sides of the engine head. A drive shaft connects the transmission to the heavy duty rear axle. The second model is in the collection of an historic vehicle museum and is the open-cab version of the same truck. That example, however, was repainted many years ago and is incomplete. Our example is entirely original and complete. It was, for more than ninety years, in the family of one of the Autocar employees who built both examples. Bought from the family in 2011, the Autocar is arguably one of the finest sales samples ever produced by early American industry. SIZE: 51″ l x 21″ w x 25″ h.
