LAMINATED HALF HULL SHIP’S MODEL “BIRD OF THE WAVE”. Third quarter 19th century. This laminated half hull made of maple, pine, walnut and mahogany, depicting the keel, stem, rudder and bow, mounted on a molded oak board, affixed with a metal label stamped “JH/1857”. Stenciled on the back of the mounting board is “BIRD OF THE WAVE 178T 1857 Jos. HOLMES”. The hull above the water line painted black. It is believed that this is a model of the 178 ton Brig built by Joseph Holmes in 1857 at the Jones River Ship Yard in Kingston, Massachusetts. SIZE: Overall 8-1/2″ h x 38″ l x 4-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Deaccessioned from a New York maritime museum. CONDITION: Very good overall, retaining original surfaces. 9-97028 (2,000-4,000)
