LAMINATED HALF HULL SHIP’S MODEL “REINDEER”. Third quarter 19th century. This laminated half hull made of maple and mahogany, depicting the keel, stem, rudder, three masts and bowsprit, mounted on pine backboard with applied molding, affixed with a brass label stamped “SB/17”. The hull above the water line painted black. It is believed that this is a model of the whaling ship “Reindeer” built in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts in 1853 and so marked on the bottom of the mounting board. SIZE: Overall 10-1/4″ h x 38-1/2″ l x 4-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Deaccessioned from a New York maritime museum. CONDITION: Retains all original surfaces, very good overall. 9-97027 (1,500-2,000)
