AMERICAN SAILOR-MADE WHALE IVORY SWIFT. Mid-19th century. This turned and polychrome decorated tabletop example with vise fastener of typical accordian form having 13 arms each with four accordion staves. SIZE: Length closed 20 1/4″ CONDITION: The swift retains its original surfaces with nice color and patina. The ties, however, are mostly absent making it impossible to open the swift without disassembling. Some staves are broken; we assume all elements to be present. Small turned fastener on shaft absent, otherwise very good. 9-97409 (1,200-1,800)
