JOSEPH W. PIERCE (American, Mid 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “GLORY OF THE SEAS”. Large watercolor ship portrait shows a three-mast black hulled ship in full sale flying the American flag. The name emblazoned on the bow. Several smaller ships are seen outside a point of land with windmill and lighthouse. Signed lower right and dated “1871”. Housed in its original deep walnut frame with gold liner having a replaced matte with gold liner. The “Glory” was built in East Boston in 1869 by Donald McKay and Pierce was in Boston/Marblehead area when this painting was done. The painting originally hung in the marine store owned by the Lincoln family of Boston which was location on Atlantic Street Wharf in Boston. SIZE: Sight: 24″ x 36″.
