EXQUISITE 18TH CENTURY GOLD GILT ON SILVER TOILET BOX. This box made in Canton around 1750 is almost identical to an 18th Century gilt box which at one time belonged to Catherine the Great. That box; photo number 364 is illustrated on pg. 218 of “Treasures of Catherine the Great”. Box with shaped sides and top having exquisite handwork, intricate lacy design affixed to the entire surface of the lid. A similar extraordinary intricate lace work silver design also applied to the shaped sides featuring variations of a crosshatch openwork lattice. The box is fitted with two handles on the ends and also fitted with a locking device (no key present). Box exhibits astounding artistic craftsmanship. SIZE: Approx. 7″ l x 5″ w x 2-1/4″ deep. CONDITION: Retains most of its original strong gilt finish and with the exception of a teeny spot of “lace loss” in the upper left corner of lid the lace otherwise appears to be excellent. A stunning treasure. 9-21892 (20,000-26,000)
