IMPORTANT SCRIMSHAW TUSK FROM NAPOLEONIC WARS. 1st quarter 19th century. This rare British example traces two military campaigns. The first carvings depict the “TERRITORY OF CALCUTTA” with a rendition of Fort William on the “RIVER HOOSLEY” (Hooghly). Next is a depiction of a large fort with British flag and the names “ASSAYE” and “MOHAULPORT”. The battle of Assaye, September 23, 1803, was part of the Second Mahratta War in India; Mohaulport is a village where a battle was fought on November 1, 1803. Both were part of the Anglo-Mahratta campaigns. The central section of the tusk is scrimmed with the symbol of King George III, an officer on horseback brandishing a sabre and the name “SIR ARTHUR WELLESLEY” (1769-1852), the first Duke of Wellington, and a British officer in command of British troops during the Anglo-Mahratta campaigns. The next panel depicts two soldiers facing each other, separated by the name “ALEPPI” (also India). The last panel is scrimmed with the names “CORUNNA” and “ROLICA” centering a church. The Battle of Rolica in Portugal was fought on August 11, 1808; the Battle of Corunna in northwest Spain was fought on January 16, 1809. Both battles were part of the Napoleonic Wars and both were under the command of Lieutenant General Arthur Wellesley. The name “SGT. A. BOTHAMLEY” and “45TH FOOT” are lightly scrimmed on the reverse of the tusk. At the time of cataloging, we were unable to locate archival records for an A. Bothamley, 45th Foot, in the aforementioned campaigns. We did find an Arthur Thomas Bothamley, 24th Foot, in India in 1844. SIZE: 28″ l. PROVENANCE: From a private collection. CONDITION: Very good overall, with good color and patina. 9-94991 (8,000-12,000)
