FINE AND IMPORTANT CHINESE EXPORT CARVED OVAL EAGLE PLAQUE. Mid 19th century. Unique plaque depicting displayed eagle clutching 5 arrows in left talon perched on American shield flanked by American flags with 13 stars and stripes, further flanked by cannon and cannonballs above stylized waves. Image surmounted by banner with words “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. All within oval frame in Oriental taste carved with four cartouches of landscapes with figures alternating with carved flowering shrubs and branches with rope twist borders, outermost trimmed with carved scrolling vinery. We believe this is an example of “Patriotic Art” that may have been a special order. As such it is a rarity of folk art combining two cultures. For similar example see The Decorative Arts of THE CHINA TRADE by Carl L Crossman page 304 and color plate 109 on page 312. SIZE: 14-1/2″ h x 17-3/4″ l x 1-3/4″ d.
