UNUSUAL PARQUETRY “FRIENDSHIP” BOX. Second half 19th- century. This nice mahogany example with stepped hinged lid opening to an interior lined with red velvet, the lid interior fitted with mirror plate, the box on a stepped molded plinth inlaid overall in various geometric contrasting string inlays, the central panel on the box lid inlaid with a symbol of friendship illustrated by two hands clasped in a handshake. SIZE: h. 5-1/2″ x l. 10-1/4″ x d. 7-1/4″ CONDITION: Box retains original surfaces with good patina. Inlaid escutcheon now absent. Originally fitted with a small tray, now absent. 9-99893 (400-600)
