ADOLF SCHREYER (German, 1828-1899) THE STARTLED TEAM. Monumental oil on canvas winter scene shows a single person green sleigh pulled by a team of six horses with a driver atop one horse of the team. A soldier of rank is seated in the sleigh holding a rifle which he just fired wounding one of two wolves that has startled the horses. Landscape is a snow covered ground with forested border. Signed lower right “A. Schreyer 1881” as well as artist plaque on center bottom of frame “A. Schreyer 1828-1899″. Housed in an antique gesso decorated gilt frame with gilt liner. SIZE: 46″ x 72”. CONDITION: Masking varnish. Under bright light there appears to be a covered over signature or title above the artist’s name. One inpainted repair in sky which needs attention.
