MARKLIN ONE METER OCEAN LINER. Just discovered in a Midwest house, this fresh to the market huge ocean liner is in “as-found” condition. More than likely this boat the was never used as a toy (would have sunk with the open portholes) but rather as a display model of a ocean liner in a travel agency. Marklin probably modeled this boat after the “Kaiserin Augusta Victoria/Empress of Scotland” but most likely used the abbreviated name “Augusta Victoria” which is rubber stamped on the bow and stern of the boat. The real oceanliner was German built (Vulkan Shipyards of Stettin) being commisioned in 1906 and retired in 1931 cruising between Hamburg and New York. At its initial voyage in 1906 it was the largest ship in the world but only a year later in 1907 that title fell to the ill fated Cunard “Lusitania”. The toy boat is a slightly later Marklin series(1920s) with twin screw operation and open portholes (as opposed to decal portholes) on the sides and upper decks of the ship. Removing the upper deck would give access to the hull which would have contained two battery powered lights used to illuminate the boat. The illusion of a real passenger ship at night with lights spilling out from the portholes and the lighting illuminating the upper decks was most realistic and an eye catcher to those passing by the travel agency. The boat at some point in time has had over painting with possible exception to black on hull area. A great boat, a wonderful size, and a new discovery that is in need of proper restoration, but well worth the effort! SIZE: 38-1/2″ l. CONDITION: Overall boat is intact and solid needing a few minor repairs, solder points, and restoration to paint. Lifeboats are likely replacements. However, masts appear to be original to boat. 1-10526 (10,000-15,000)
