HUGE PAPIER MACHE CLOCKWORK PUMPKIN HEAD. Without a doubt this was used in a storefront window for display and/or attention-getting purposes. Certainly any child or adult walking along the street would have to stop and laugh out loud and also notice whatever wares the merchant was trying to sell. Halloween was, and is, almost exclusively celebrated in America. The irony is that most Halloween items were manufactured either in Germany or Japan for the American market. This hollow-headed fellow of German manufacture circa 1910-1920 has a large opening at rear of head (hat covers opening) exposing the clockwork motor to activate the eyes and tongue. Obviously this poor chap is in desperate need of an optometrist as his eyes are completely crossed. When mechanism is activated his tongue darts out between his grinning teeth and his crossed eyes roll about, taking in his surroundings. His watermelon smile, his Pinocchio-like cucumber nose and humongous eyes make this a captivating and charismatic Halloween character. SIZE: Approx. 41″ circum. x approx. 11-1/2″ h. w/o hat. CONDITION: Most likely due to size and frailty, some repair to papier mache at top of head and some inpainting as well. Hat probably not original to piece. 1-10478 (8,000-12,000)
