DUNCE WITH BROKEN SLATE CIGAR CUTTER. An attractive cast iron cigar cutter. Patented 1885 featuring a black youth seated on earthen mound. When the cigar is placed in the youth’s mouth, and his arm is depressed, the tip of the cigar would be cut off. Normally found in a nickel plated or copper oxidized finish, this particular example is quite rare and is enameled in vibrant colors. The iron cutter itself is attached to a flanged wooden base. SIZE: 7″ t with base. CONDITION: Overall paint condition very good plus. Lacking “broken slate” in right hand. Spring to hold arm up is either lacking or weak from age? 1-13417 (450-750)
