CLOCKWORK THEATER W/TWO DANCERS & GENTLEMAN IN WINDOW, ATTRIBUTED TO AUTOMATIC TOY WORKS. A most unique toy circa 1870’s-1880’s, featuring a house with a gentleman peering out the upper window while the white and the black dancers do a jig. The facade of the house on the first floor has a dual lithograph on paper of a young man dancing while the two dressed figures protrude from the front by means of wires, the dancers standing on a lithographed paper base with a simulated paper lithographed roof. The goateed male patron of the arts looks down from above in a benevolent and approving manner. When the clockwork is activated, the dancers alternate their motions while the male patron looks from right to left. The clockwork mechanism is contained within a painted tin box which is directly behind the front facade. Believed to be one of two known examples existing today! SIZE: 9″ h. x 6″ w. x 7″ d. CONDITION: Overall in very good plus functional working order. Minimal wear & paper loss, original clothing excellent condition but slightly dusty. Papier-mache figure in window has some damage to nose. 1-10502 (6,500-9,500)
