ELEPHANT & MONKEY CLOCKWORK BELL TOY ATTRIBUTED TO ALTHOF BERGMANN. Extremely rare & unusual African elephant with monkey astride seat clockwork bell toy. The toy maker’s imagination and creativity ran wild with this version of an elephant toy. Starting with the clockwork with eccentric heart shaped wheels mounted askew to make the platform turn in a consistent left circle and the eccentric wheel movement lets the elephant goes up and down at the same time, causing the bell clappers to strike the bell atop the elephant. The clockwork and rear heart shaped wheels have a very unusual set of mounting brackets, a clever way to make use of an otherwise standard base. On top of the orange base is “Patented Aug 26, 1884″ on base. Whenever a new idea such as how to mount this clockwork was sued a patent was applied for to protect the design from being used by other toy makers. The gray elephant with blue blanket with gold stripes has a gaily painted trained monkey seated on his back, guiding the elephant along, forever turning in a circular pattern. The bronze bell mechanism is mounted atop a stamped embossed tin saddle, cast iron clappers and cast floret finial. SIZE: 10″ l x 10” h. CONDITION: Overall condition is very good to fine. Some repair/repaint to bell mounting shaft/saddle, some touch up/repair to monkey. Clockwork mechanism appears to be functional. 1-10463 (8,000-10,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
