UNSIGNED (New France, 18th century) RARE FOLK PORTRAIT OF YOUNG ROYALTY. Oil on canvas depicting a young boy in 17th/18th century attire with high lace collar, 3/4 length formal coat with red trim at collar and sleeves, bow with ornate grip in right hand and red arrow in left hand, with red stockings woven with a fleur de lis at the ankle, and wearing black shoes with red high heels. These are all accoutrements of royalty accorded the children of the Dauphin, the King’s Heir Apparent. The red heels and red edged shoes remained a privilege for the French nobility until the time of the French Revolution originating with Louis XVI. A King Charles Spaniel rearing on its hind legs for attention is in the lower right. SIZE: Sight: 42-1/2″ h x 32-3/4″ w. CONDITION: Extensively restored by a respected conservator in Southern Maine. Whether executed by a French itinerant artist of the time or executed by the “Freake Painter”, as has been supposed. This example has many attributions to both. 9-97008 (10,000-15,000)
