STEVENS & BROWN CLOCKWORK “VICTORIA” OMNIBUS. Oftentimes early American toys were either produced or found their way overseas. This particular example was without a doubt produced for the English market, hence the name “Victoria”. A spectacular, fresh to the market, early American tin clockwork toy with a most interesting story. This toy eventually wound up in the once British colony of Bombay, India (which is now Mumbai). The most recent owner was a Maharajah, perhaps having been passed down in his family for 100+ years. Basically in untouched original condition with only an aged amateur repair to center bar of the yoke. Painted a rich yellow with prolific amount of red stenciling all over the body of carriage. White horses with black trapping and red belly bands do have some paint loss, most noticeably to their tails which, when the front end is turned, rub against the driver’s footrest. An opening rear door, exposing the clockwork mechanism, is intact and in remarkable condition. SIZE: 12-3/4″. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus. Rear step support is present but tin step missing. Carriage itself is in remarkable paint condition. Horses, as mentioned earlier, show slightly more paint loss than carriage itself. Clockwork mechanism untested. 1-10280 (30,000-40,000)
