MIN QUA (Chinese, 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “THOMAS BELL”. Large oil on canvas portrait of a three-mast ship with black hull in full sail sailing left to right with a port in the background having many different ships. The ship has eight crew members aboard and flies the British flag and ships pennant off mast. The sky in a pink to blue color with white clouds. The legend “Thomas Bell Geo Gruzelier Commander Leaveing Shanghi Harbour”. Signed lower left and inscribed bottom right “Painter”. Housed in a replacement gilt decorated frame. SIZE: 25-1/4″ x 40-3/4″. PROVENANCE: The historic Perry House on the harbor in Southport, CT, descended through the family. CONDITION: Relined, very good. 9-96355 (15,000-25,000)
