RARE IVES CLOCKWORK VICTORY ENGINE WITH ARTICULATED INTEGRAL TENDER BELL TOY. This train engine has an inimitable style of design about it. The whimsy and imaginative design of this loco exemplify the early toy makers style and adds greatly to the folk art appeal. Although the tender was produced separate from the engine, they have been riveted together with a bell in between. The clockwork mechanism propels the toy in a forward motion and the large wheel hidden within the tender body strikes a gong and causes the bell to ring. The path of the train is adjusted by altering the position of the tender. Another interesting item about this tender is the simulated wheels on the tender as well as the simulated wheels under the engine. The front large heart shaped wheels on the engine with steam chests below the engine cab window, it seems that this appears to be reversed from normal engines? Oftentimes it is difficult to determine the manufacture and this engine at first glance appears to be Ives, but perhaps it also could have been manufactured by Fallows. The banding on the engine is synonymous with Ives and especially prevalent with later Ives cast iron locomotives such as the 17, 20, 40 etc. The tender wheels stamped tin embossing can be found on other Ives locomotives and help to determine the manufacturer of this toy. The cab has typical fire plug windows and a variety of colors (green, red, black, blue) with a prolific amount of stenciling makes this a unique and attractive clockwork toy. SIZE: 13″ l.
