HULL AND STAFFORD LARGE CONFECTIONERY WAGON. In the 1800’s one didn’t just run into town to get confections or fancy goods. This is the toy version of the itinerant salesman’s wagon that would go across the countryside plying his wares. If you look in any reference books on the 1880’s you find the real version of this wagon and will notice that the toy version was a close copy of the real thing. The compartments would have opened like these do and be filled with all the delights that country people wouldn’t normally have access to. This large toy version, featuring many details such as opening compartments on the top and in the rear, faithfully depicts the real thing. The driver sits atop the front with a folding canopy and is another example of the toy maker’s art as you will notice this driver distorted form. The wagon is gaily painted in dark blue and red and very heavily stenciled on practically all surfaces. One of the unique features of the stenciling on the sides is that there are three colors; gold, bronze and silver. The stencils continue in gold and are very scroll-like and decorative. Even the driver has lavender pants, a dark red coat, and a black top hat. The front hitch has typical Hull and Stafford white horses with red belly bands and rein painted details. Also underneath the horses are two support wheels that raise the horses up so the wagon can glide across the floor. SIZE: 19-1/4″ long. CONDITION: The toy retains all original pieces and parts, however there has been a fair amount of restoration including left horse reattached to hitch, right horse re-solder/touch up, inpainting to wagon itself, etc. 1-10283 (7,000-9,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
