CITY PASSENGER CAR “TROLLEY” ATTRIBUTED TO HULL AND STAFFORD. A unique form with unusual paint decoration not only to the side but to the roof as well. A very early toy with a Francis, Field & Francis influence about the trolley car itself. The use of hand embellishment, fine line stripe brushwork and stenciling together was a transitional period for early toy makers. The extra paint details and decorations gradually were cut back as improvements in manufacturing went on. The use of only stenciling for decoration as time savings meant cheaper manufacturing costs. Cathedral style windows, punched out tin clerestory [an Ives train car copy?] and a bench for passengers within and quite possibly at one time this vehicle could have had a clockwork motor! A typical George Brown horse draws the trolley along and seldom found a trolley of this size with other such unique qualities! SIZE: 20-1/2″. CONDITION: Horse reattached to traces with some minor touch-up. Trolley appears to be in original paint with a light clear coat to sides only, most likely to deter paint flaking. 1-10513 (4,000-6,000)
