RARE CLOCKWORK CIRCUS CAGE, ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE BROWN. Less than a handful of this particular toy is known to exist today. Pictured in The George Brown Toy Sketchbook, Plate #17, and a variant pictured on p. 211 of American Antique Toys. Obviously these toys came with either a single or a team of horses and a floor toy or clockwork version. This particular toy, when clockwork is wound and activated, rolls in a forward motion (front end swivels to go straight or in circles) while the tiger inside paces to and fro. As discussed earlier in the catalog, George Brown utilized several stampings in many different toys. The fringe of surries and milkwagons is used here for decoration on the cage. The footrests of the driver could have been used as saddles on horses or decoration on rear of fire pumpers, etc. Absolutely fresh to the market, this toy was discovered in a European attic and is in basically as-found condition. Years of dust and dirt, a missing footrest support and the clockwork mechanism in need of lubrication. In remarkably fabulous condition, with minimal wear to painted surfaces. Even more amazing, the japanned tin fretwork is brilliant, even after 125-plus years! A unique opportunity for collectors of early American tin to add a very special toy to their collection. SIZE: 13″ l. CONDITION: Overall generally excellent. Front yoke assembly has had some re-solder. 1-10504 (35,000-65,000)
