WOMEN’S RIGHTS ADVOCATE CLOCKWORK TOY ATTRIBUTED TO AUTOMATIC TOY WORKS. One could say that this is a political toy from the latter part of the 19th century. Toys often reflected the political and social climate of the period. This particular toy features a woman of color “up on the stump” seeking rights for women of the time period. A very unique as well as colorful clockwork toy, when mechanism is activated this woman leans forward, slamming her hand on the podium as if to make her point, and then rises up, turning her head to survey those in attendance of her declarations. The painted box enhanced with an abundance of gold stenciling; original clothing on lady, with her gutta percha head and inset beady glass eyes, has a comical look about her. This figure was also used on other clockwork toys, such as the clergyman, the preacher, and the stump speaker. Automatic Toy Works tended to polychrome the wooden boxes and, later on, Ives also produced these toys but generally in a natural finish to the walnut boxes. This toy is pictured on page 113 of American Clockwork Toys by Blair Whitton. SIZE: 4″ w. x approx. 10″ h. x 5″ d. CONDITION: Overall very fine original condition, with slight dustiness to clothing and light soiling to painted box. Clockwork mechanism is functional. 1-10503 (6,000-9,000)
