EXCEPTIONAL 46″ MARKLIN OCEANLINER “THE DEUTSCHLAND”. A very rare sized Marklin oceanliner (46″ 117cm) in all original untouched condition with provenance. According to the consignor he purchased this toy in 1961 from Sally Erath who was in charge of the antique toy department at the famed F.A.O. Schwartz toy store in New York City. Most collectors today are unaware that for a number of years F.A.O. Schwartz in the mid 20th Century operated an antique toy department along with selling toys of the current vintage. In the early 2000s F.A.O. Schwartz decided to rekindle the antique toy department, but this venture was short lived. The boat is of exceptional quality which one would expect anyway having been made by the famed Marklin Toy Co. One could only imagine placing this boat in the water which is driven by four propellers which are electric powered. Most elaborate masts with what appears to be original stringing are intact along with the original flags on both masts and the original flag on stern of boat. Typical red hull with black mid-section and white upper decks. This oceanliner was accompanied by 24 lifeboats, three mammoth smokestacks, twin anchors at bow of boat and a host of other features. One can not say enough about the quality and/or paintwork that Marklin utilized while manufacturing toys and thus today is most likely why these toys are highly sought after by collectors. The boat, although a bit dirty from decades of accumulated dust could use a light cleaning although not necessarily needed. Boat is supported on a felt lined wooden cradle. SIZE: 46″ l. CONDITION: Overall condition as stated above, comes with seventeen original lifeboats. Overall alligatoring to paint, most noticeable on the red and black hull. The electric motor which was battery driven appears to be intact but untested. 1-11772 (50,000-75,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2012 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
