25 CENT COLUMBIA SLOT MACHINE. Although seldom unreliable, this particular machine is in fine original condition as well as in working order. Produced right before World War II and retailed for under $100, this device was small, compact and the coin mechanism could be easily be converted to nickel, dime or quarter in minutes by the operator. These machines differed from their competitors in that the “coin slides” was actually the circular ring at the top that is visible through the window hence the ease of changing the coin denomination. Being lightweight, small and compact (approx. 40lbs) these machines could easily be hidden away under the counter in the event of an imminent raid by law enforcement officers. Although the quality was not the same as fellow manufactures…Mills, Jenning, Watling etc., these machines served their purpose and generated great amounts of income for their operators. Columbia produced these machines after the war in a little over $100 and they were still popular, but often times due to the fragility and heavy use their pot metal parts became fatigued and damaged. Their reliability lessened with play and age and it became more effective to spend more money and buy a better unit, thus the decline of Columbia slot machines. A natural finish to the wooden cabinet, the upper and lower castings are painted red with a speckled white affect, original steel back door with replacement lock. SIZE: 15″ w x 12″ d x 18″ t. CONDITION: Overall very good to fine with normal wear to painted aluminum castings and wood. 1-9589 (300-500)
