RARE AND UNIQUE PAIR OF HAWAIIAN KOA FIGURAL ARMCHAIRS. Late 19th early 20th century. The first example carved from the solid. The back carved in the form of a squatting figure, head turned to the side, dressed in a loin cloth. The figures outstretched arms forming the armrests and supported by a full-body youthful figure all joined to a circular solid seat supported by three female figures with outstretched arms, one at the front of the base the other two at the rear, standing on a conforming circular plinth. The whole carved from a solid section of tree trunk. The second example also carved from the solid with similar details. The differences being that the central figures arms are rendered at a 45 degree angle and the three support figures are rendered with two at the front and one at the rear. In both examples the profile of the central figure is facing left. SIZE: First: 47″ h x 20″ w x 18″ d ; 20″ h of seat. Second: 46-1/2″ h x 22″ w x 18″ d; 19-1/2″ h of seat. CONDITION: Very fine condition overall with rich patina and coloration. 9-22513 (10,000-15,000)
