DARKIE GONG BELL TOY. Gong Bell produced a prolific grouping of bell toys in the late 1880s-1890s, most depicting the political or social climate of that period. This particular example has a finely cast iron framework with heart shaped wheels and a seated black figure in the center of the framework. When the toy is propelled forward, by means of an eccentric axle, the black figure sways to and fro while the bell underneath rings. The fanciful iron framework is painted in silver and the seated black figure has iridescent red coat and shorts and an iridescent green bowler hat. SIZE: 6-3/4″ l. CONDITION: Toy appears to be in good to very good all original condition. 1-13631 (800-1,200)
