AMERICAN TWO-SIDED SCRIMSHAW WHALE’S TOOTH. Second half 19th century. On a later mount. One side depicting the ship U.S.S. Columbia beneath a trophy display of six crossed American flags centering an American shield beneath a displayed eagle clutching banner and sheaf of wheat beneath a wreath beneath Scales of Justice; the two surmounted by the sun rendered with a character face. The opposing side scrimmed with two square-rigged ships engaged in battle beneath a displayed eagle clutching an American flag all flanked by garlands of holly. Situated between the flags on the edge of the tooth is an unidentified family crest. SIZE: 6″ l x 2-1/2″ (tooth); 7″ h (overall). PROVENANCE: Robert Frederick Woolworth Estate, Monmouth, Maine. (F.W. Woolworth Store). CONDITION: Surfaces soiled and with small shrinkage crack running vertically down both sides from tip of tooth. Otherwise very good. 9-23563 (1,000-2,000)
