REVEREND LEMUEL WILLIS OAK PRESENTATION GOBLET. Mid 19th century. This nice example of treen mounted with two silver plaques, the first engraved in script, “Presented to Rev. Lemuel Willis, by a friend.“. The second, mounted on the opposing side, engraved in script, “This piece of wood is a part of a timber used in the construction of the first Universalist Church erected in New England in 1779 at Gloucester Mass.“. The Reverend Willis (1802-1877), of Warner, New Hampshire, was a noted speaker for the Universalist Church throughout Southern New Hampshire and Northern Massachusetts. This turned goblet with flared molded rim footed on a stepped and circular plinth. SIZE: 8-3/4″ h x 7-1/2” d. CONDITION: With old crusted and crackled surfaces and with vertical hairline shrinkage cracks. The base rim with shrinkage checking. Overall very good. 9-97533 (800-1,200)
