FINE FOLK ART CARVED EAGLE WITH AMERICAN FLAG. Late 19th/early 20th century. Attributed to George Stapf (1862-1958), Pennsylvania. This nice gilt example of a displayed eagle mounted with a large American flag held between the eagle’s head and wing. NOTE: Affixed to the back of the large flag is the retailer’s label of Joseph J. Carbone, 106 Charles St., Boston, Massachusetts, with a photo of the advertisement in Antiques Magazine November 1959 announcing the availability of this eagle. The text announcing the availability of this item for sale reads as follows “A CARVED AND GILDED EAGLE WITH PAINTED FLAG, BY JOHN BELLAMY. LENGTH — THIRTY-SIX INCHES. John Bellamy of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is the famed carver who worked for Boston and Portsmouth navy yards, and is especially noted for his fine carved eagles.”. * In spite of the label, we believe the style to be that of George Stapf. Also affixed to the back of the flag is a typed label indicating the provenance of this eagle as having been the “PROPERTY OF ADLAI E. STEVENSON III”. SIZE: 19″ h x 38″ l. CONDITION: The eagle with restoration and reattachment of proper left wing with loss to plumage of proper right wing beneath the neck of eagle. Extensive old losses to talons and losses to beak tips. We believe the carving to now exhibit later gilding and paint over original surfaces. 9-22424 (5,000-10,000)
