NUMBER 400 BUDDY L TRENCH DIGGER. This massive trench digger, or ditcher, stands out as the biggest, heftiest (weighs 28 lbs), and most complex in design and construction. Certainly it is among the most colorful. There are few parts taken from other toys, as manufacturers sometimes did to cut costs, this one must have been very costly to manufacture. It originally retailed for around $25 in 1928-1931, which would have easily bought a used car back then and was at the beginning of the Great Depression. Naturally they are extremely rare today, especially as complete and in original condition as this one is. This toy would truly be enhanced in value as well as appeal by a professional cleaning. Originally this toy would dig a trench 1-1/2″ wide and up to 8″ deep. The crank, with wooden handle, in motor housing (drive gear missing) drives 22 digging buckets via chains and sprockets; ratchet, crank and cords control trench depth; separate crank on front operate canvas belt to distribute dirt to either side. Buddy L decals on motor front, radiator decal, and on chute above conveyor. Buddy L Trench Digger decal on crawler frame. SIZE: 24″ long, 20″ high, 14″ wide. PROVENANCE: From the collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Very good plus. Conveyor belt pot metal gears show signs of distress. Drive gear on motor housing missing. Toy appears to be all original paint with no parts replaced. 1-10220 (2,750-4,750) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
