BUDDY L INTERNATIONAL RED BABY. In 1923 Fred Lundahl (founder of Buddy L) produced a special truck for International Harvester that now is quite a rarity, the “Red Baby”. Whether this was originated by the big farm machinery and truck maker or was suggested to IHC by Lundahl, who had first offered his original toy truck to International for publicity and sales promotion and had been rebuffed, is unknown. In any case, Buddy L began making and International began selling to its dealers the toy Red Baby trucks to promote the sale of a special version of an IHC Model S delivery for “Speed Truck” that it had brought out in early 1922. Prices at $4, the trucks were sold to McCormick-Deering dealers for display and resale. The truck is an open body express truck except that it has an enclosed doorless cab. It has front and rear fenders with full length running board and cast aluminum 8-spoke wheels. Truck is entirely deep red in color except for aluminum tires. This truck also retains its “INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER” decal on both sides. The “IHC SALES AND SERVICE” on both sides of cab and “McCORMICK-DEERING” decals on top of both doorways of cab. SIZE: 24″ PROVENANCE: From the collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Very deep mellow toned patina and overall thin paint with no touch ups. Some paint loss to bed. Overall a very pleasing example. Front bumper frame horns are pushed in slightly. 1-10252 (2,500-3,500)
