IMPORTANT LACQUER AND PAPIER-MACHE DECORATED TRAY IN THE ORIENTAL TASTE. Mid 19th century, probably Chinese Export. This large example with deep scalloped edges heightened with gilt floral sprays; the tray with central cartouche inlaid with mother-of-pearl and gilt decorated depicting a building within a treed landscape centered by secondary cartouches of mother-of-pearl floral sprays alternating with four small oriental landscapes all on a black ground heightened with densely scrolling leaf tips all sprinkled with abalone dust. SIZE: 32-1/4″ x 24-1/2″. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: Very good overall with small damages and losses to underside of tray edge. Surfaces original. 9-21852 (1,000-1,500)
