GEORGE III JAPANNED TALL CASE CLOCK WITH CHINOISSERIE DECORATION SIGNED EDW. GRETRAS/BIRMINGHAM. Late 18th/Early 19th century. The bonnet with pagoda top and gilt onion spire finials. The astragal door flanked by free standing colonettes. The silvered dial with Roman numeral chapter ring and Arabic chapter ring within filigreed cast brass spandrels beneath an arched moon phase dial. Center with a sweep seconds subsidiary dial over the elliptical name plate engraved “Edw. Gretras/BIRMINGHAM”. Centering three apertures above a silvered calendar aperture. The brass movement with triple drum, musical cylinder with four hammers, and gong chimes striking on gong. The case with astragal arched molded door joined to the cove molded box base, raised on bracket feet centering a shaped apron. The whole with simulated tortoise shell graining, chinoisserie decorated with a multi-storied pavilion in a treed landscape with fanciful birds and a unicorn. SIZE: Overall 111″ h. Throat 13-3/4″ w. 8-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Robert Frederick Woolworth Estate, Monmouth, Maine. (F.W. Woolworth Store). CONDITION: Japanned, painted and stenciled surfaces all with losses and peeling from dryness. Movement appears structurally intact, otherwise good. 9-23515 (5,000-7,000)
