RARE AND IMPORTANT PINE AND OAK KNEADING TABLE. Early 18th century. The thick pine five-board top, each seam with a butterfly tenon above the square frieze and joined by sliding brackets attached to the top and the frieze. As such, the top slides above the frieze opening to a compartmented well revealing an original receptacle for a lock, now absent. The underside of the top displays the area where the original lock engaged the top to prevent it from opening. The square frieze section of dovetailed construction decorated on three sides with scrolled fielded panels above a molded plinth. This section is then joined on dowels to a shaped and scalloped trestle base. The trestle base with scalloped and shaped edges again joined by square trusses fixed by wedges and centering a decorative panel with molded edges and pierced heart. This trestle base is additionally fitted with a single drawer with canted sides conforming to the shape of the table. The drawer front is also decorated with a pair of scrolled fielded panels. The whole constructed with exposed dovetails. The drawer retains the original iron strap backing for the original pull which is now absent. The base of the feet is joined by flat mortised shelf-like stretchers. SIZE: 30″ h x 41-1/2″ l x 35-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Purchased by the current owner from a family in Brooklyn Heights, NY in the middle part of the 20th century. For similar examples see “Furniture of the Pilgrim Century” by Wallace Nutting, pgs 355 & 366. CONDITION: The top scrubbed and with added splices to correct shrinkage at seams of top. The interior of the well with compartments probably added in the 19th or early 20th century. The base appears to retain all original elements. As previously stated, lock is now missing as is the handle of the drawer. Minimal insect damage noted primarily in one board on side of frieze. Trusses and wedges appear original. There is an addition of approximately 1″ on the base of each trestle section to compensate for early wear and/or dry rot from dampness. These additions appear to be 19th century at the latest. The entire base of the table exhibits a very dark patina, the outer surfaces showing fairly extensive degrees of wear. The table as a whole remains in very good condition for its age. 9-20883 (2,500-3,500)
