AMERICAN CARVED GEORGE WASHINGTON COMMEMORATIVE WHEEL BAROMETER. Circa 1840. Designed and executed by Guiseppi Tagliabue (1812-1878), an important maker of scientific instruments in New York. The wheel barometer mounted within a heavily carved case rendered with cross, pike, gun, sword, anchor, tasseled cord and drapery and with a bust portrait rondele of George Washington. The instrument featuring a circular silvered barometer dial within a convex glass and brass bezel. The thermometer within a rectangular compartment carved with shells. The thermometer also with silvered dial, engraved “G. Tagliabue/302 Pearl St/N.Y”. The barometer dial engraved “Guiseppi Tagliabue/302 Pearl Street/N.Y.”. The aperture adjusting hole set below Washington’s profile takes a small key with round turned know which is present. Lot is sold together with a framed bibliography of the maker. SIZE: Overall height 56″ CONDITION: This fine example, beautifully carved and retaining its original finish in chocolate brown patina. The instruments in good clean order. A 3/4″ diameter hole at 1:00 above the barometer dial to which was originally attached a carved element of unknown description and now absent. 9-97391 (15,000-25,000)
