UNUSUAL REGENCY MAHOGANY DROP LEAF EXTENSION TABLE. Circa 1800. This rare example with rectangular one-board top fitted with D-form single board hinged leaves, all with reeded edges. The top, with leaves extended swiveling on the rectangular molded frieze. Each end fitted with a simulated escutcheon locking mechanism within molding simulating frieze drawer. When released the ends of the frieze extend on wood runners. The whole on ring turned bulbous supports raised on downswept reeded molded saber legs with brass capped casters. Note: The underside of the top and leaves are fitted for brass clips. The heavy brass hinges are screwed into the leaves. The top is fitted with cutout space to accept the hinge flange. Although the hinge is drilled for five screws, there is no evidence of the hinges ever having been screwed into the top section. The assumption is therefore, that when in the down position, the leaves are maintained in place simply by the hinge’s pressure upon the apron. The leaves are then removed when the top is turned and remounted on the supporting apron when used as an extended table. The top and leaves are then connected by the brass clips. SIZE: 29″ h x 29″ w (closed) x 55-1/2″ l; 70″ w (extended). PROVENANCE: From a fine Massachusetts home. CONDITION: Structurally very good with all original parts. The main table top bleached from exposure to sun. Overall in need of a repolishing. 9-22121 (800-1,200)
