RARE IVES CLOCKWORK “UNITED STATES” ENGINE & TENDER BELL TOY. An unusual form, this particular, early style American locomotive features the large drive wheels in front with steam chests located under cab window. The attached tender, which is hinged to allow the train to go straight or curved path. Another unusual feature is the bell located between the cab and tender, which is activated by a large center wheel with a paddle that is struck when the toy rolls along the floor. Most attractive due to the typical fireplug style windows and various colors employed (dark green, dark blue, red, and black). Fine stenciling throughout including “United States” in gold on two sides of the boiler. To view a similar Ives train, please refer to page 48 of “The World of Antique Toys” by Jefferey Levitt. SIZE: 13-1/2″ l. CONDITION: Overall good plus. Top of cab roof appears to have been repainted and aged appropriately. Four fixed wheels on tender appear to be reattached and repainted, possibly older replacements. 1-12944 (800-1,200) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - June 2013 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
