GEORGE III INLAID MAHOGANY TALL CASE CLOCK, GEORGE QUARMAN, TEMPLE CLOUD. Circa 1775. The swan’s neck pediment with cast brass rosettes alternating with ball and spire finials above the arched frieze with six pointed star inlays, the astragal arched door with scrolling borders flanked by Corinthian stop fluted columns with brass capitals and bases. Cove molded case fitted with scrolling arched door with central inlaid floral pattera, throat sides with canted corners joined to the cove molded box base centering a Classical inlaid urn within fern leaf spandrels flanked by conforming canted corners on a stepped cove molded base raised on unusual ogee cabriole legs terminating in small angular pad feet. Three train brass movement playing on a nest of bells. Silvered dial with inlaid brass Roman numeral chapter ring beneath arched moon phase dial beneath “HIGH WATER at BRISTOL KEY”. Between numerals “X” and “XI” is a silent chime lever. Also between “I” and “II” is lever determining the number of working bells. Triple weight driven movement with three winding apertures, one for quarter hour chime, subsidiary seconds dial located above the hands arbor above an arched calendar aperture and maker’s name in script “George Quarman/Temple Cloud”. All within spandrels composed of various figures in period dress. Britten’s Old Clocks and Watches and Their Makers, seventh edition, page 457: Under reference of Quarman family clockmakers, Temple Cloud is the following text “long-case clock showing ‘High water at Bristol Key’, about 1775, signed ‘Geo. Quarman, Temple Cloud’.” SIZE: 8′ h x 14-3/4″ w of throat x 9-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From a private Vermont collection. CONDITION: Seat board replaced. Box base with old shrinkage cracks.
